Peter: Sorry Meg. Daddy loves ya, but Daddy also loves Star Trek, and in all fairness, Star Trek was here first.

Isn't it interesting that back in the day when I was a yungen I played outside all day and well into the night every day during the summer. Now I have a hard time getting my own kids to do much outside and I have come to a certain realization that it's my fault. As a parent in these times we can't let our childeren play outside alone for fear of someone abducting them. So I generally have to be outside with them when playing in the front or side yard. They can play in the back yard alone for the most part but front or side not so much. It's sad really when I think of all the places I went as a child during the summer with just a few friends. We would be miles away from the house for a good part of the day and that was normal. Not anymore though, we've been so messed up by instant access to news from accross the country. So now I have to spend time out with them and you know what, it's sometimes very hard to get past the whole "ME" thing and realize that I only have but a short time with my childeren and really I could Tivo the Star Trek or just buy the DVD's. It's a daily struggle that I'm sure all parents go through but for me it's the time before I fall asleep when my brain goes to all the times when I've been like Peter.

Wow. Owens makes some very good points. I'm not much of a student of history but this sounds interesting. I'm going to have to read this book. Read the whole arcticle at NRO Online.

It is certain that the Union soldiers tired of hearing from the Copperheads that the Rebels could not be defeated. They surely tired of being described by the Copperheads as instruments of a tyrannical administration trampling the legitimate rights of the Southern states. The soldiers seemed to understand fairly quickly that the Copperheads preferred Lincoln’s failure to the country’s success. They also recognized that the Copperheads offered no viable alternative to Lincoln’s policy except to stop the war. Does any of this sound familiar?

Today, Democratic opponents of the Iraq war echo the rhetoric of the Copperheads. As Lincoln was a bloodthirsty tyrant, trampling the rights of Southerners and Northerners alike, President Bush is the world’s worst terrorist, comparable to Hitler.

These words of the La Crosse Democrat responding to Lincoln’s re-nomination could just as easily have been written about Bush: “May God Almighty forbid that we are to have two terms of the rottenest, most stinking, ruin working smallpox ever conceived by fiends or mortals…” The recent lament of left-wing bloggers that Vice President Dick Cheney was not killed in a suicide bombing attempt in Pakistan echoes the incendiary language of Copperhead editorialist Brick Pomeroy who hoped that if Lincoln were re-elected, “some bold hand will pierce his heart with dagger point for the public good.”

Antiwar Democrats make a big deal of “supporting the troops.” But such expressions ring hollow in light of Democratic efforts to hamstring the ability of the United States to achieve its objectives in Iraq. And all too often, the mask of the antiwar politician or activist slips, revealing what opponents of the war really think about the American soldier.

Pi is wrong! How can this be. Pie can NEVER be wrong. I love pie! Your making my head hurt. Now he did spell it wrong but really he only left out one letter. I think we can forgive that. They give a good argument that pie should really be 2 pie which I whole heartedly agree with. I would much rather have 2 pies that one. They argue that it simplifies a lot of things and I agree. It would really simplify my life because as it is now with only one pie I tend to share less and keep more for myself, but with 2 pies I could share a little more without feeling like I'm missing out. Now one thing I don't get though is this whole 2 pie are square thing. What's up with that? Where I come from pies are round not square. Square would be a cobbler not pie. So I'm torn between wanting 2 pies instead of one and changing them to squares. If we change pie to square what do we do with cobbler? Tell me that! I guess cobbler will have to become octagonal or some such. Ah well, I'll take my 2 pies and go home. Viva la France!

Why do we as Americans insist on electing people to positions that I guess are beyond there capabilities? If these people worked for me and could not get together long enough to decide how to allocate the budget for a project without adding meaningless and unrelated requirements they would not be in there position long. Sadly we seem content with the status quo despite what everyone says around the water cooler.

An odd way to start off blogging but here goes......

How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

We've all heard that before right? It suppose to be a tung twister and all that but if we really break down what it says, can we calculate an answer to the question? Let's give it a try shall we.

"How much wood"
so first we need to know the unit of measure here. Are we talking about pounds, board feet, cords or some other unit of measure that I don't know about? What about time frame? Are we talking a week, day, hour? Who knows, your guess is as good as mine but lets start with per hour and then we can calculate all the other time frames. As for units lets pick pounds just because.

"could a woodchuck chuck"
Ok, so what do we mean by the word chuck? Are we talking throwing it, eating it or what? I'm going to pick throwing here because thats the best definition I could find on Google.

"if a woodchuck could chuck wood"
So can a woodchuck chuck wood? Don't know, but according to wikipedia it can chuck a lot of dirt.

Now that we have all our parameters defined lets develop an algorithm to calculate the pounds of wood that a woodchuck could chuck, assuming of course that he feels up to it and all.

First lets define the terms we will need.

#W we will call this our answer or pounds of wood. For you young folks that don't get it, oh well.

vW we will call this wind velocity in miles per hour. (metric smetric!)

vV we will call this wind vector in degrees (-180 to +180)

cS we will call this the stomach content of the woodchuck in question in pounds. We will need this because it is a well knows fact that a full woodchuck is a lazy woodchuck.

sL we will call this the leg circumference of the woodchuck in question in inches.

sA we will call this the arm circumference of the woodchuck in question in inches.

qS we will call this the quickness of the woodchuck in question in feet per second. A slow woodchuck is a dead woodchuck so a low number here really wouldn't make sense because the woodchuck would be dead anyway.

Now that we have defined all of our terms lets put them together.

#W = ((sA + sL - cS) * (vW * vV) * qS) / 60 sec/min

Given this algorithm we can safely calculate that a woodchuck with 1 inch arms, 3 inch legs, 2lbs of food in his belly and can move at 10ft/s can throw wood into a 2mph wind at 90 degrees.

((1+3-2)*(2*90)*10)/60 = 60 pounds of wood per minute

So we can say that a woodchuck can chuck 3600 pounds of wood per hour and so on.

Well, there you have it. My first blog ever! Woot! I know the algorithm sucks but what do you want for 10 minutes of thinking and besides I haven't seen YOU trying to figure it out.
